Open RQC colloquium. Lecture 7


The seventh lecture "Optical Kerr combs in microresonators: from chaos to solitons" in "Open RQC colloquium" will be held in National University of Science and Technology MISIS (Moscow, Leninskiy prospekt 4), lecture hall № Б-636 (6th floor), on 16th of September at 10:00 a.m. by Michael Gorodetsky, professor at M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University and Coherent Microoptics and Radiophotonics group lead in RQC.


Abstract

Optical frequency combs revolutionized metrology and experimental physics and were marked by the Nobel Prize in 2005 (J.Hall, T.Hänch). The advent of microresonator based Kerr combs opens a path to novel applications where traditional combs requiring bulky apparatus cannot be used. Key advantages of microresonator based frequency combs are their compact form factor, high power per comb line, and ability to access repetition rates of 10-100 GHz, relevant for many applications including instant spectroscopy, high capacity telecommunications and microwave photonics. At the same time Kerr combs provide physicists with nearly ideal systems for studying nonlinear dynamics and dissipative solitons.
